TaylorMade R9 Driver on golfshopping18.com

The combination of TaylorMade Flight Control Technology and Movable Weight Technology make the TaylorMade R9 Driver the only totally adjustable driver on the market!

Use the built-in Flight Control Technology to change the face angle, lie angle and loft of your R9 Driver to affect side-to-side flight by up to 40 yards. There are a total of eight different clubhead positions. Utilize TaylorMade's Moveable Weight Technology to change the CG (center of gravity) location to affect side-to-side flight by up to 35 yards.

Inverted cone geometry in a classic head shape helps to ensure fast ball speed and big distance even on off-center hits while offering both traditional and modern lines in a stunning driver head.

The sophisticated high-inertia tip of the Fujikura Motore F1 65-gram low-torque graphite shaft promotes faster ball speed.

Features:

  • TaylorMade Flight Control Technology (FCT) lets you change the face angle, loft and lie
  • Movable Weight Technology (MWT) lets you change the clubhead's center of gravity
  • FCT and MWT together offer total adjustability to promote up to 75 yards of side-to-side trajectory change
  • New classic clubhead shape combines super-high MOI and easy-launching CG position
  • Fujikura Motore 65-gram shaft with High Inertia Tip (H.I.T.) technology promotes faster ball speed

I was seeking a driver to replace my R7 425. First I bought the FT-IQ, overpriced joke. Then I 90/90 for a Dymo STR-8 which I hit just as bad as the Callaway. Both clubs I hit shorter and with a slice. Then I purchased the R9 and after two changes of the shaft setting I now have a club I am hitting straight and 20 yards farther. My R7 was 11.5 R. The FT-IQ was 11 degree with a light shaft. The Dymo was 10.5 R and I used several different shaft positions.

This driver is the real deal. I was skeptical and demo'd it a number of times on the course before making the leap. A 4 handicap with a 105mph swing speed and I've left the club in N position. I'm a pretty straight hitter that gets 265 yards of carry normally. The club, 1st the shaft is stiffer then normal. You should certainly look at all shaft options when testing. I ended with the stiff and love it. 2nd, club was longer then I expected. I wasn't counting or even looking for a yardage gain so I'm pleasantly surprised with the 5 to 10 extra yards I'm picking up. 3rd, it looks, sounds and feels like a driver should. All business. 4th, how cool is it you can change the lie and loft? I don't really need to adjust the left or right ball flight (although I likely will at some point this season). But the simple fact I can add or subtract loft to take advantage of playing conditions is great. We're getting a bunch of rain this week so I'll add some loft to increase the carry for Saturday. That doesn't even seem fair!

This would be the 5th Taylormade driver I have owned in the last 6 years. I am currently hitting the Burner Draw and actually like it vey much. However, having hit the R-7 for quite a while I was interested in the R-9. I have had it a little over a month and at this point am using the 90/90 guarantee to return it to G18. I cannot get the ball in the air no matter what I do. After 3 rounds and multiple trips to the driving range I went back to G18 to get some help. They recommended I go to a regular shaft versus the stiff which I had no problem with. Back on the range and on the course same results. I have made every adjustment I can and still the ball will only get about half the height I have with my Burner. I took my annual trip to Myrtle Beach last week and left the R-9 at home. Love Taylormade drivers and irons but this one was a major disappointment to me.

I have the 9.5 with the regular stock Motore shaft. I am a mid single digit H/C with a 90 mph swing speed and have tried just about all the premier drivers out there. Below are some of my main observations about the R9.

1) The Motore shaft plays significantly stiffer than what the R and S indicate. If your speed is under 100 mph consider the regular. Also don't expect an upward kick up from the shaft. It's fairly stiff tipped. This may be one of the reasons that anonymous below had with getting the ball in the air versus his other driver. A shaft with tight dispersion and good feel. You see the pros using it in their R9's so that says something.

2) Considering it is 420 cc's, the is limited loss of distance when hit off center was a surprise. Bottom and heel hits still gave good distance. When you catch the sweet spot, however, you know it. Ball just shoots off the face.

3) Expensive but being able to tune in your desired flight makes this club worth it. There are 24 options but you'll probably just mess with 4 or 5. No more regrets about buying the right loft or flight bias.

4) I'm getting a penetrating flight with spin around 3300 rpm which isn't bad for my club speed. I wouldn't say it's any longer than any of the other top of the line drivers but it is very consistent.

Give it a try but be sure to demo with the different stiffness shafts.
